Our Day

A busy day for Room 6. This morning we visited Parklands Library. Many children are members of the public library and were able to get some books out. A big thank you to Scarlet's dad Nick for helping us out. This afternoon children ran the cross country at last. All their practice paid off. Callum was 1st in the year 1 boys with Xavier coming in 2nd. Sienna was placed 3rd in the year 1 girls. We are so proud of you all. Ka mau te wehi (awesome)!!

Mrs Lindley's girls come to visit

On Tuesday Mrs Lindley bought her girls Grace and Gemma to meet Room 5 and 6. They came and joined us for our whānau hui. The children liked asking Grace lots of questions like
"Do you do singing at school?"
"Do you do handwriting?"
Gemma told us that her favourite song was punga werewere, a song she sings at pre-school.

Mihi

Last term we learnt a basic mihi. The children were encouraged to put in their own maunga (mountain) awa (river) and iwi (tribe) if they had one.
Check out Violet sharing hers with no prompts.
Wananei Violet we are so proud of you.

Buddy Reading with Rm 14

Monday afternoon Rm 5 shared their library time with Rm 14. The children enjoyed reading their books to a buddy (or buddies!) and being read to!

Reading in Room 5

Most nights your child will bring home a new reading book. This is the book they have read in class and is to be read again at home.

The children are beginning to work through different strategies.

They all know they need to use their eagle eyes to look at the picture for clues.
They need to get their lips ready to make the first letter sound of unknown words.

The children will begin to listen to their reading
"does it make sense?"
And stretch out the words (their letter sounds need to be known to be able to do this).

Remember not all words can be sounded out. Sight words (or high frequency words) need to be learnt and instantly recalled. Don't be afraid to tell your child a word.

If your child is too tired at night then read a book to them. Reading to them is still as important as them reading to you.

Buddy Reading

Friday afternoon Rm 5 were paired up with a reading buddy. The students had to read their reading books to each other. I was so proud of the children - they were attentive listeners and awesome supporters if there buddy made a mistake.
Ka mau te wehi!

Kitten Stories

Ayla and George B's story about the kittens.

The kittens are beautiful and playful. I liked the kittens.

The kittens are cute and fluffy.

Cute Kittens

Today Room 5 and 6 were delighted to have five cute, little kittens visit us.  Thank you to Teresa (Tabytha's mum) for taking the time to bring them in. It was a great experience for all the children many of whom have not seen or stroked a kitten before.
These little bundles of fur are nearly 6 weeks old.  There are still two that have not yet been placed if anyone is interested.

Measurement

This term we have begun our measurement unit. We have started by looking at measuring using non-standard units.
Today Room 5 measured the width of the netball court using a meter ruler, heel to toe steps and using big giant steps.

Room 7's Visit to Kindy

So much to explore at Kids First Kindergarten yesterday. Half an hour just wasn't long enough so we will have to go back again soon for ...
